Music organizations are not machines. They are living, adaptive systems that are shaped by culture, economics, community relationships, and individual artistry all at once. And the people leading them rarely have a roadmap.
This research examined how music leaders navigate complexity without losing sight of what matters: the music, the community, and the people in the room. Drawing on complexity theory and adaptive leadership frameworks, the project developed a set of principles for leading in environments where the “right answer” is rarely obvious and where staying responsive matters more than staying in control.
If you work inside a music organization and have ever felt like you were building the plane while flying it, this one is for you.
